The Squid’s Tale

Written by Omen Thomas Sade

“The Squid's Tale is a dexterous dance with a literary behemoth. Fusing physicality, humour, and impressively well constructed verse to create a fascinating reimagining of a well loved classic.  This show has something for everyone from, land lubbers to seafarers alike.” Jack Kelly, OftheJackel

ABOUT THE SHOW:

The Squid’s Tale welcomes the audience to the depths of the sea, where mankind is a foreigner. Our narrator is Architeuthis dux, the giant squid which haunts human tales of the sea, and about whom little is known even by modern scientists.

When Captain Nemo and his submarine, the Natulus, arrive in this world, the creatures of the sea fear his presence and send the mightiest among them to protect them. What begins as the Squid’s investigation into the ways of man quickly cascades into obsession, love, betrayal, hatred, revenge, and oblivion. The fantastical world of Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea provides the setting for this original piece.

Though first the Squid dismisses man as unthinking and unfeeling, he soon discovers such human peculiarities such as music, writing, funerals, and love. When Nemo and his crew become stuck in the Arctic ice, the Squid does the unthinkable and saves the humans against the apparent rule of nature. The Squid’s actions beget unintended consequences for his own species, and for ours.

Through cruelty or through ignorance, Nemo repays the Squid by slicing off one of his tentacles and leaving him for dead. Love sours to hatred as the Squid vows to right the crime of his defigurement. This spells disaster for our hero and his kind as a battle between squids and the Nautilus’ crew ends in a deadly defeat for squidkind. Still reeling from this tragedy, the Squid is an eye witness to one of man’s worst crimes, the killing of his own kind. After Nemo sinks another ship leaving no survivors, the Squid’s path of vengeance becomes one of divine retribution.
